Temple David Choir

Choir Notes

Beginning this month, the Temple David Choir will have a brief monthly message for the Temple David Bulletin. The message will include information on a variety of topics including new music, recruitment of new members, features on choir members and more.

We will begin by featuring our Musical Director, Sharon Leibowitz. Sharon joined Temple David in 1962. She has been involved in music at Temple for over forty years. Sharon has been a player of the Temple piano/organ/keyboard throughout these years. She has worked in the Religious School as the director of student assemblies devoted to music. Sharon has been the Musical Director of the Choir since 1994, a period of remarkable stability and continuity for the choir due primarily to her efforts. Sharon has also participated in musical endeavors in the community at large, particularly with a group called the "Muses." Yasher koach to Sharon Leibowitz!!!

The choir is always looking for new members as well as for individuals who may be able to fill in for Mrs. Leibowitz at the keyboard. Neither great voices nor an extensive knowledge of music or Hebrew or liturgy is required. What is required is the willingness to put in the time and energy for rehearsals and for singing at worship services. The choir can be great fun as one works with a congenial group of dedicated members. Participation in the choir is also a way of substantially contributing to worship at Temple David. Anyone interested in joining the choir should contact Choir Secretary Marsha Myerowitz (choir@templedavid.org).

The Temple David Choir has a long and rich history. This all-volunteer adult choir was founded in the same year as the congregation, i.e., 1958. The Choir has functioned continuously with the exception of a short period in the early 1980s.

Currently, the Temple David Choir sings for most Shabbat evening services, all B'nai Mitzvah services, and all High Holy Day and Festival Services. It is unlikely that there is an all-volunteer synagogue choir that sings that much anywhere in the world.

The present Choir has ten members including two married couples, Marsha and Richard Myerowitz and Aggie and Marty Segal. Some of our other members are Lois Barron, Connie Schwartz-Bedo, Randy Boswell, and Jan Zimmer. Many choir members have been serving for more than a decade. The choir director is Sharon Leibowitz, who also has been serving in that capacity for more than ten years, and who was a choir member herself before that.

Temple David also has a long history of Junior Choirs for Religious School students. A new Junior Choir for girls and boys in grades 3 - 6, has recently started functioning.

If you are interested in auditioning for either choir, please contact Marsha Myerowitz at 412-856-4465. Candidates are not required to read Hebrew. We are always interested in expanding our Choir family.

Play Piano or Keyboard?

WE NEED YOU!!

Can you play a piano or keyboard? Are you interested in working with the choir? Then we need you! We are looking for a backup for those times when Sharon Leibowitz is not available. Even if you would only be able to play chords, we are interested in talking to you.

Please see the bulletin for contact information. Not only would you be helping us out and serving the congregation of Temple David, you'd be having a lot of fun!

Temple David also has a Junior Choir!
